On Wednesday, August 26th, Utah State University’s Jon M. Huntsman School of Business held their National Advisory Board meeting at Deer Hollow. The focus of the evening was centered on coaching and the value of effective communication in giving and receiving feedback. After an introduction by Bill Adams, participants were led through a quiz to help them determine their own “coaching style.” to learn more about one-on-one coaching

Denise Parker, Olympic archer and professional coach, talked about what coaching had meant to her "It's the opportunity to work with someone who inspires you without the negative pressure of expectations versus inspiration."

Each of us is in the position of being coached, or of coaching others, on a regular basis - while we might not think about it in quite those terms, many of the fundamentals that make up a coaching relationship are operating for us every day. Consider, for example, the simple act of giving and receiving feedback – a basic tenet of coaching. Think about how often you have been given feedback and how often you have been asked to provide it. We do this all the time and as most of us know, for a variety of reasons, sometimes it is more effective than others. But by paying attention, and with a few basics in place, each of us can become more coachable and become more effective as a coach.

Everyone in the group had the opportunity to practice their own coaching talents in an active learning environment utilizing archery skills, in some cases while blindfolded. This was followed by a demonstration of Denise’s own superior marksmanship and the evening concluded with dinner at the lodge.

Utah State University's National Advisory Board

The board provides advocacy, consultation and support for the school and the continuing development of its business programs. Serving as an advocacy group both on campus and off, the board promotes a positive image and good relations for the school with the rest of the university as well as with the region, state and nation. It also helps connect the students, faculty and dean of the school with society at large.

The National Advisory Board consists of no more than 30 distinguished persons, including alumni and other friends of the school, appointed by the dean. Members assist the school in acquiring the resources necessary for its continuing development, provide counsel to the dean, increase recognition on–and–off campus of the school’s vigorous business program and engage in other actions that enhance the academic standing of the school and the general well being of its diverse programs, students, alumni and faculty. to learn more about Utah State University Jon M.
